About Sirmione
Sirmione stretches into the southern end of Lake Garda on a slender peninsula, entered beside the moat and walls of the Scaliger Castle. Built by Verona's della Scala family, the castle has walkways around its courtyard, a keep 37 metres high and the only surviving example of a 14th-century fortified harbour.
Beyond the castle, lanes lead past cafés and gelato shops to the tip of the peninsula, where the Grotte di Catullo preserve the ruins of a large Roman villa above the water.
Know before you go
- The old town is a limited-traffic zone; vehicles drop off outside the walls.
- Climbing the keep and wall walkways means steep, narrow steps.
- The castle is closed on Mondays.
- Under-18s enter the castle free.
