About this experience
Close to 2 km on foot from Place de la Concorde up the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe, then 284 steps to the roof terrace with your entry ticket.

- Start
- 10:00 or 15:00 by the Marly Horses at the foot of the Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde. Meet your guide 15 minutes before.
- The climb
- 284 steps to the terrace, mostly a narrow spiral. The lift is out of service until further notice, so the terrace is stairs only.
- Bags
- Bags up to 40 x 40 x 20 cm only, with a security check at the arch. You reach the arch by the underground Passage du Souvenir.
- Closures
- The arch closes on 1 May and on the mornings of 8 May, 14 July and 11 November, and can close at short notice for official ceremonies.
- Group size
- Small group, 15 travellers at most. Minimum 2 travellers per booking.
The story
Napoleon ordered the arch, and building lasted from 1806 to 1836. Its architect, Chalgrin, died on 20 January 1811, when the pillars stood only about a dozen metres high, and the arch was inaugurated on 29 July 1836. François Rude carved The Departure of the Volunteers, one of the four sculpted groups, between 1833 and 1836.
An unknown soldier of the First World War was brought to the arch on 11 November 1920 and buried beneath it on 28 January 1921. The flame was first lit on 11 November 1923, and it is rekindled every evening at 18:30.
