About Champs-Élysées
André Le Nôtre laid out the first tree-lined way here in the 1660s as an extension of the Tuileries axis. Today the avenue runs close to 2 km from Place de la Concorde, where a 3,000-year-old Egyptian obelisk stands, up to the Arc de Triomphe.
The lower half is parkland, with the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, both built for the 1900 World's Fair. The upper half is shops, cinemas and café terraces, and the traditional finish of the Tour de France.
Know before you go
- From Concorde to the Arc is a gentle uphill walk of close to 2 km.
- Long-term redesign works may affect some pavements and crossings.
- Keep valuables zipped away; pickpockets work the busy stretches.
- Parades and events, such as 14 July, close the avenue to visitors.
