The story

Plaza de España was the centrepiece of the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The architect Aníbal González wrapped a half-circle of brick and tile around a canal crossed by four bridges, and gave each province of Spain a tiled bench and map along the walls.

In the old town, the Giralda began as the minaret of the great Almohad mosque in the 1180s and 1190s; Hernán Ruiz added the Renaissance belfry in the 1560s. The Cathedral that replaced the mosque, the Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias, built as a merchants' exchange and an archive of the Americas since 1785, were listed together by UNESCO in 1987.

The Setas, properly the Metropol Parasol, opened in 2011 over Plaza de la Encarnación. Designed by Jürgen Mayer H., its timber canopy shelters a market and the Roman remains found during the works, and carries a walkway across the roofs of the old town.
