The story
Seville grew along the Guadalquivir, the river that made it the port for Spain's trade with the Americas in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Torre del Oro, an Almohad watchtower of the 1220s, still guards the bank where the fleets tied up.
Two exhibitions shaped the outer city: the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, which left Plaza de España and the pavilions around María Luisa Park, and the Expo of 1992 on La Cartuja island, now a park, a technology campus and the Isla Mágica theme park.
