The story
The cruise starts beneath the Palace of Westminster, rebuilt after the fire of 1834. The Great Clock in its tower began ticking on 31 May 1859, and the tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012.
Downstream, Wren's dome has stood over the City since Parliament declared St Paul's complete in 1711. The run ends at Tower Bridge, which opened in 1894 and still lifts its roadway for river traffic, beside the Tower of London begun by William the Conqueror in the 1070s.
