About Tower of London

William the Conqueror began the White Tower in the 1070s to keep his new capital in check. Over 900 years the Tower has been a royal palace, armoury, mint, zoo and prison, with Traitors' Gate on the river side and the execution site on Tower Green.

The Jewel House holds the Crown Jewels, still used at coronations, including the Imperial State Crown and the Sovereign's Sceptre with the Cullinan I diamond. Yeoman Warders, known as Beefeaters, lead tours included with entry, and at least six ravens live within the walls.
