About Louvre Museum
Begun as a fortress around 1200 and rebuilt as a royal palace, the Louvre opened as a public museum in 1793. I. M. Pei's glass pyramid, unveiled in 1989, became its main entrance.
Most visitors head for the Denon wing: the Winged Victory at the top of the Daru staircase, the Mona Lisa in the Salle des États, and the Grande Galerie of Italian painting. The Venus de Milo stands in the Sully wing. The Galerie d'Apollon reopened in July 2026, its painted ceiling on view and its jewel cases removed.
Know before you go
- Closed on Tuesdays.
- Several galleries are closed for renovation, including the Napoleon III Apartments and the Galerie Campana.
- Security check at the Pyramid; large bags are refused.
- Leaving is final: there's no same-day re-entry.
