About Musée d'Orsay
Victor Laloux built the Gare d'Orsay for the 1900 World's Fair; it reopened as a museum in 1986. The station's barrel vault and gilded clocks still frame the main hall.
The collection covers 1848 to 1914. Upstairs you'll find Monet's Rouen Cathedral series, Renoir's Bal du moulin de la Galette, Degas's dancers and a run of Van Goghs. Manet's Olympia still causes a stir. Look out through the giant clock face on the top floor towards Montmartre.
Know before you go
- Closed on Mondays.
- Until summer 2028, timed-ticket holders enter from the Seine-side quay during building works.
- Security check at entry; bulky bags go in the cloakroom.
- Major works occasionally travel on loan, so a favourite may be away.
