The story
Food has been sold at the southern end of London Bridge for around 1,000 years. In the 1270s the City of London stopped traders setting up on the bridge itself, and in 1550 it took over the market. After Parliament moved to shut it in 1754, local parishioners founded a new market off the high street in 1756, on the site it still holds.
In 1862 a railway viaduct was cut through the market, and Borough became a great fruit and vegetable wholesale hub. After a Food Lovers' Fair in November 1998 it began to reinvent itself as a retail market for quality food. Southwark Cathedral next door was refounded as a priory in 1106 and became a cathedral in 1905.
