About Borough Market

Traders have sold food near the southern end of London Bridge since medieval times, and the market has used its present site since 1756, under a web of Victorian iron, glass and railway viaducts. The South Portico, added in 2004, came from the Floral Hall at Covent Garden.

Today more than 100 stalls, shops and restaurants sell British cheese and meat, fish, bread and produce, alongside hot street food from around the world. Southwark Cathedral stands beside the market, and Bankside, the Globe and Tate Modern are a short walk west.

Know before you go

  • The market is closed on Mondays.
  • Most traders take card and contactless payments.
  • Popular stalls can sell out by mid-afternoon, especially on Saturdays.
  • It's crowded at lunchtime; keep bags closed and in front of you.
